Know thyself but, better yet, know the caregiver you hire.

Just a few days after I posted my Blog entry about knowing the risks of hiring a caregiver yourself, not using an agency, comes this story from right here in Houston where a senior was injured by his caregiver. When choosing an agency don’t be afraid to ask about their hiring practices, do they check their potential employee’s motor vehicle record, perform a criminal background check and do drug tests on potential employees? If a background check had been done on this caregiver it would have been evident that trouble was brewing, a DWI is not a laughing matter but tip off to deeper issues.

Ask what kind of insurance the company carries to cover liability and if they carry Workman’s Comp insurance for their employees? This last one is mportant because Texas does not require employers to carry Workman’s Comp Insurance but injuries are not uncommon in this industry. A company that takes care of its’ employees will have caregivers that will take care of you and your loved ones.
